A bubble sheet scanner is not a machine. It is software that reads an image of a filled-in answer sheet and decides, bubble by bubble, which ones a student marked. The technique has a name, optical mark recognitionOMR (optical mark recognition)Optical mark recognition (OMR) is the technique that detects, on a scanned sheet, the boxes or bubbles a candidate has filled in and turns them into machine-readable answers. Historically it relied on dedicated readers measuring ink density at fixed positions on a form printed to the reader's exact layout. Modern software applies the same principle to an image from an office scanner or a smartphone: it locates the registration marks, straightens the image, then analyses each answer area. The output is one answer grid per paper, which the software then compares against the answer key to compute the grade., and it is older than the personal computer: the first machines cost thousands of dollars because reading the marks was the hard part.
Reading the marks stopped being the hard part. What a modern tool does is everything around it: line the page up when the copier fed it crooked, recognise the sheet even when it was photographed at an angle, tell a firm pencil mark from a smudge, find the student the sheet belongs to, flag the sheet where two bubbles are filled so a human can look, and turn all of it into grades and statistics.
That is why the scanner in the corridor is enough. The camera in your pocket is enough. What used to justify a dedicated reader now runs on the image, not on the paper.
