What gets shuffled

Shuffling applies from two versions up: with one paper there is nothing to differ from. The same link and the same questions always give the same versions, so a reprint matches the key you already have.

How to make a multiple choice test

    Paste your questions

    One question per block, the answers under it, a star on the right one. The box opens with a worked example so you can see the shape before you replace it. Anything the parser cannot read is reported with its line number, never dropped in silence.

    Ask for as many versions as you need

    From one to eight, lettered A to H. Each version shuffles the order of the questions and the order of the answers, and carries its own key. Two neighbours no longer have the same paper in front of them.

    Print sends the papers alone, without the rest of this page. The PDF is laid out at the exact size of the paper you chose. The Word file is there for the paper you still want to edit: a letterhead, a figure, a question moved.

A worked example: three questions, four versions

The syntax is a dash for an answer and a star for the right one. Nothing else is required: numbering, letters and blank lines are all optional, and a letter you typed yourself is thrown away, because each version re-letters its own answers.

The third block shows what a checkbox marks: two correct answers, and a key that reads B/D on the version that lettered them that way.

The syntax the box expects

A block is a question. The first line is the stem, the lines under it are the answers, and a blank line ends the block. That is the whole format, and everything else is a tolerance rather than a rule.

An answer opens with a dash, a star, a plus or a bullet. A star or a plus marks it correct; so does a checkbox with an x in it, and so does a star at the end of the line, which is how most people annotate a printed key. A letter in front of an answer is read and then discarded, because the letters are re-assigned on every version and a `C)` you typed would contradict the `A)` printed on version B.

The parser is forgiving on purpose, because a teacher pasting out of a word processor is not writing code. A missing blank line still closes a block. A stem that wrapped over two lines is still one question. A `12)` at the head of a stem is stripped, since the numbering is re-assigned too. What it never does is guess: a question with no marked answer is printed and reported, so you find out here rather than in the corridor.

A single question can have more than one correct answer. That is a single-answer versus multiple-answer questionSingle-answer versus multiple-answer questionA single-answer question admits exactly one correct answer among the options, whereas a multiple-answer question may admit several: the candidate must then tick all the correct ones and none of the wrong ones. The distinction governs the scoring rule: a single-answer question is graded right or wrong, possibly with negative marking; a multiple-answer question calls for partial credit, for instance by discordance. It also governs the instructions: candidates must know whether they may tick more than one box. On an answer sheet the two formats use the same grid; the answer key and the scoring rule make the difference. and the tool makes no distinction between the two: mark one star or mark three, and the key names whatever you marked.

How to print the paper: scale, paper size, sides

One setting decides whether what comes out of the printer is the paper you laid out, and it is wrong by default in a great many drivers. In the print dialog, set the scale to 100 percent rather than Fit to page. Automatic fitting shrinks the sheet by a few percent, which on a question paper costs you nothing visible and on the answer sheet you print alongside it moves the corner marks a scanner needs.

The second is the paper size. The paper is produced at the size chosen in the options, Letter or A4, and the printer tray has to hold the same. Printing a Letter document on A4 works, but the margins are no longer the ones the columns were measured against, and a two-column paper is where that shows first.

Print single-sided if the papers are going to be scanned back. A double-sided paper has to be fed twice, and a pile of thirty fed twice is a pile of thirty in which one sheet ends up the wrong way round. If you are printing several versions, keep them in separate stacks: the versions are only useful if you know which one you handed to whom.

How many questions fit on one page?

It depends on how long your questions are, which is why the tool measures the text rather than promising a number. The arithmetic is worth knowing all the same, because it is the arithmetic that decides whether you set the paper in one column or two.

A question of one line with four answers takes five lines of the column, plus the gap that separates it from the next: about five and a half. At 11 pt an A4 column holds around forty-five of those lines under the header, so eight such questions in one column and sixteen across two. Longer stems eat into that quickly, which is the whole reason the font size is an option and not a constant.

The tool never squeezes: past the point where a question does not fit at the foot of a column, the whole block moves to the next column or the next sheet rather than being split across the fold. A stem at the bottom of column one whose answers open column two is a question people answer wrong, and no amount of paper saved is worth that.

How shuffled versions stop copying

The oldest answer to a crowded room is to sit people further apart, and the room is rarely big enough. Shuffled papersShuffled papers, A/B versionsShuffled papers are versions of the same exam in which the order of the questions, of the answer options, or both, differs from one paper to the next, so that two neighbours cannot copy each other box by box. The simplest form is a pair of A and B versions handed out alternately; the most thorough generates a unique paper per candidate. Shuffling imposes two constraints: every paper must carry a version identifier the software can read, and the answer key must follow each question to its new position. It can also apply to exercises and sections, as Papeez does with its four-level shuffling, and combines with a barcode on every paper. answer it differently: the person next to you has the same questions in a different order, and each of those questions has its answers in a different order too, so the letter they wrote in box seven is the answer to a question you have not reached yet.

That is why the shuffle happens on two axes and not one. Reordering the questions alone leaves the answers where they were, and anyone who notices that the right answer is B four times in a row has learnt something about both papers. Reordering the answers alone leaves the numbering intact, which is the thing a neighbour reads fastest. Both together, and a copied column of letters is worth nothing.

The shuffle is drawn from a number, not from chance, and that matters more than it sounds. Reprint version C tomorrow because you fixed a typo in the title, and you get the same version C, with the same key, which is what lets the pile on your desk still match the sheet in your hand. The button next to the versions is the only thing that draws a new one.

Version A is shuffled like the others. A run in which one paper is the source order is a run in which whoever saw the file has an advantage, and the point of the exercise is that no two papers in the room are the same. The one exception is a single version: with nothing to differ from, shuffling would only scramble the paper you just wrote.

How to grade the papers afterwards

Shuffling solves one problem and creates another: four versions mean four answer keysAnswer keyThe answer key is the list of expected answers to every question of an exam, the reference each paper is compared against to produce a grade. For a multiple-choice exam it states, for each question, the correct choice or choices and, where relevant, the scoring rule attached: points per correct answer, penalty per error, treatment of a blank. When papers are shuffled, the key must be attached to each question independently of its position, so the same question is graded the same way in every version. A printable answer key also serves as a proofreading document before the exam and as feedback material for candidates afterwards., and grading by hand now means picking the right one for each paper before you start. Thirty papers across four versions is thirty decisions nobody should be making at eleven at night.

By hand, the way that works is to sort the pile by version first, then grade each stack against its own key with the key beside you rather than in your head. The tool prints the keys on their own sheet, one block per version, in the order the questions appear on that version, precisely so that stack and sheet can sit side by side.

The other route is to have the paper read back.
