Migrating from AMC

You know AMC. Here is what Papeez changes.

Auto Multiple Choice does its job well — provided you have the time to install, configure and maintain it. Papeez applies the same principle with nothing to install.

What AMC does well, and we will not pretend to do better

Auto Multiple Choice is free software written by Alexis Bienvenüe. It costs nothing, it is powerful, it runs without a connection, and it leaves you full control over your data and your layout. For anyone fluent in LaTeX with a Linux machine, it is an excellent tool — and many of us owe it our first automated grading.

Free and open source

No licence, no subscription, source code you can audit.

Works offline

Everything runs on your machine, with no third-party service involved.

LaTeX typesetting

Typographic control few web tools can match.

Where the time goes

These are not flaws in AMC: they are the cost of a desktop program designed for Linux.

Installation

AMC targets Linux. On Windows you need WSL2 or a virtual machine; on Apple Silicon Macs, VirtualBox no longer fits and you go through MacPorts or an arm64 VM.

LaTeX

Authoring goes through LaTeX or AMC-TXT. Powerful, but also the step your colleagues never take.

Scanning

AMC does not drive a scanner: you digitise separately, then import the images. Every session adds a manual step.

Maintenance

System updates, Perl dependencies, project backups — the workstation becomes a small piece of infrastructure to look after.

AMC and Papeez, line by line

An honest comparison. On several rows, AMC stays ahead.

Migrating takes an evening, not a term

Your existing exams are not lost.

01

Import an existing exam

Drop in your AMC-TXT, LaTeX, Word, PDF or Excel file. AI-assisted import rebuilds questions and answers with no strict template to follow.

02

Check the layout

Columns, boxes, named or anonymous answer sheets, a barcode per paper: the preview shows exactly what will print.

03

Print and run the exam

Plain paper, ordinary printer. Each copy carries a unique identifier and its own question order.

04

Scan, and the grades arrive

The office copier or your phone will do. Reading, grading and export to Excel or PDF follow on automatically.

When to stay on AMC

If you work without a reliable connection, if you need papers never to leave your own machine, or if your LaTeX pipeline is already tuned and suits you, AMC remains the better choice — and it is free. Papeez is for people whose setup and configuration time costs more than the subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Import accepts AMC-TXT and LaTeX files, as well as Word, PDF, Excel and images. Questions, answers and maths formulas are rebuilt automatically.

No. Papeez runs in a browser on Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS, with no virtual machine and no system dependency.

No. The office copier works, and so does a smartphone camera. Unlike AMC, there is no separate image import step to manage.

In France, on Scaleway (ISO 27001 certified) and AWS region eu-west-3 in Paris. TLS 1.2/1.3 in transit and AES-256 at rest, with a GDPR data processing agreement.

For paper multiple-choice exams, yes. AMC keeps the advantage on offline use and full control of your files, and it is free. Individualised random selection is announced at Papeez for the fourth quarter of 2026.

As long as it takes to import an existing exam and check the preview — roughly an evening for a first paper, with no installation beforehand.
