If you are one teacher with five sections and a stack of quizzes, buy it and stop reading. This article is for the people who have outgrown it — and it is specific about where that line sits.

## What ZipGrade does well

ZipGrade LLC ships an iOS and Android grading app that reads answer sheets with the device camera. Published specifics, taken from the vendor's own [pricing page](https://www.zipgrade.com/pricing/) and [home page](https://www.zipgrade.com/) on 14 August 2026:

Three things deserve credit specifically.

**The price is genuinely low, and it is honest.** [$6.99 a year](https://www.zipgrade.com/pricing/) is a non-recurring subscription — you are prompted to extend rather than silently charged. Very few education tools do this.

**It grades offline.** No internet required. In a building with bad wi-fi, or an exam room with none, that is a real operational advantage that cloud-first tools do not have.

**It does not pretend to be a platform.** ZipGrade grades an answer sheet. It does that quickly and gets out of the way.

## Where ZipGrade stops scaling

Four limits, in the order teachers usually hit them.

**1. Capture is one sheet at a time.** Phone-camera grading is fast per sheet and slow per stack. Around 40 papers it is quicker than walking to the scanner; around 200 you are standing at a desk photographing sheets for twenty minutes. A sheet-fed scanner with an automatic document feeder digitises the whole pile unattended — but ZipGrade's workflow is the camera, so that hardware does not help you.

**2. It grades the exam but does not build it.** You write the question paper in Word, produce the variants yourself, and ZipGrade reads the answer sheet. The paid tier supports multiple *answer key* versions, which is not the same as generating multiple *papers*. Once you are managing four shuffled versions of a 60-question exam across 300 candidates, the authoring side is where the time goes, and ZipGrade is not in that part of the workflow.

**3. Anti-cheating is your problem, not the app's.** Randomisation across a crowded lecture hall means producing genuinely different papers and knowing which version each scanned sheet belongs to. That requires the tool that prints the paper to also identify it.

**Gradescope** is the answer if the real problem is that half your assessment is not multiple choice. Nothing else grades handwritten proofs and code the way it does.

**Papeez** is the answer if the exam itself — authoring, versioning, printing, scanning a full stack, exporting — is the bottleneck, and especially if the data has to stay in the EU.

## What you get by moving to Papeez

**The exam is built where it is graded.** Write questions in the visual editor, or import an existing paper. AI-assisted import accepts Word, PDF, Excel, images and XML with no strict template, which means the exam you already have in a .docx becomes a Papeez exam without retyping it.

## Should you switch? A three-question test

**Are you grading more than about 100 papers per exam session?** If yes, sheet-by-sheet phone capture is costing you real time and a document-scanner workflow will pay for itself immediately.

**Do you produce multiple shuffled versions of the same exam?** If yes, the work is in generating and tracking the versions, not in reading the bubbles. That is the part ZipGrade leaves to you.
